Rise-Up mist-netting (RUM): a mobile protocol for trapping wary territorial birds

چکیده
Many bird species avoid traditional traps such as mist nets, thus alternative trapping methods are often needed. The Rufous Hornero (Furnariidae: Furnarius rufus) is one that was captured so far using conventional netting in rural areas or nest-targeted traps, which risk nest damage and abandonment. Here we describe the novel rise-up mist-netting (RUM) protocol its catchability for wary territorial an urban area. RUM trap allowed us quickly capturing 40 individuals even paved parking lots streets during bird’s breeding period. active targeted demands a single trainable field assistant. Therefore, it should also enable capture of many understudied but species. Moreover, has enough mobility to fit studies areas, whenever researchers may deal with limited space and, at same time, reduce negative visual impacts general public birds’ banding procedures.

Assessing conservation status of resident and migrant birds on Hispaniola with mist-netting
We analyzed temporal trends in mist-net capture rates of resident (n = 8) and overwintering Nearctic-Neotropical migrant (n = 3) bird species at two sites in montane broadleaf forest of the Sierra de Bahoruco, Dominican Republic, with the goal of providing quantitative information on population trends that could inform conservation assessments. We conducted sampling at least once annually durin...
متن کاملSwitching from monoculture to polyculture farming benefits birds in oil palm production landscapes: Evidence from mist netting data
Monoculture farming is pervasive in industrial oil palm agriculture, including those RSPO plantations certified as sustainably managed. This farming practice does not promote the maintenance of farmland biodiversity. However, little scientific attention has been given to polyculture farming in oil palm production landscapes. Polyculture farming is likely to increase the floristic diversity and ...
متن کاملTerritorial Behavior and Population Regulation in Birds
A close relationship between territorial behavior and population regulation in birds was claimed by Howard (1920) in his classic essay on territoriality and has been emphasized by both earlier and more recent authors (see Wynne-Edwards, 1962). At present, opinions on this matter vary considerably; but there seems to be widespread entertainment, and in some circles acceptance, of the idea that t...

Long term defence planning is a complex undertaking involving many separate analytical steps and with non-trivial transitions from one step to the next. Many nations struggle with the challenge of establishing analytical rigour, structure and traceability in their defence planning processes. In this paper we will present a tool that has been developed not only to support defence planning, but w...
متن کاملFidelity of Bats to Forest Sites Revealed From Mist-Netting Recaptures
Although site fidelity to permanent roost structures by bats is generally known, long-term fidelity to areas such as foraging or drinking sites is unknown. Furthermore, mist-net recaptures of bats over multiple years are rarely reported. Extensive mist-net surveys were conducted over the course of 8 y in the Ouachita National Forest of central Arkansas, United States to investigate long-term si...
